STREET

MURALS

Missoula In Motion was awarded funds from AARP to complete two intersection murals by local artists: one completed earlier this fall at the newly installed traffic-calming circle at Cooley St. & Holmes St. in the Northside and the second at the intersection of Phillips St. and Hawthorne St. bordering Lowell School. Studies have found a 50% decrease in crashes with vulnerable road users in intersections with placemaking installations like street murals.

Missoula In Motion was among 383 projects selected from a pool of 3,460 applicants nationwide.

HOLMES ST
& COOLEY ST

The mural at Holmes St. & Cooley St. titled “Cows Jumping over the Moon” was completed by local artist Sally Joe Thompson in September. Part of the installation took place during Missoula In Motion’s annual Sunday Streets event which occurred in the Northside this year. Members of the public were invited to participate in the art installation, supporting the event’s efforts to highlight the bike and walkability of our community.

PHILLIPS ST &

HAWTHORN ST

Artist Heather Harp is partnering with the Kiwanis Club and Lowell Elementary School will install a colorful rainbow design the last 2 weeks in October. This mural will contribute to efforts to slow down traffic, increase safety, and bring awareness to drivers & pedestrians as they share the space. Lowell students will  participate in the mural installation as part of their art class. Rodda Paints has generously donated paint for the project.
