COMMUTER
CHALLENGE

FIND YOUR WHY / MAY 7-20

When someone asks "Why do you sustainably commute?" there really is no wrong answer. Maybe you like saving money, getting exercise, or connecting with friends. Maybe you care about the environment, hate sitting in traffic, or want to skip the hassle of parking. No matter what your reason is, your WHY is what keeps you making those sustainable transportation choices day after day, and week after week. And sharing your WHY just might inspire someone else to change up their commute to a sustainable one.

Walk, bike, bus, carpool, vanpool, or telecommute to work to become this year's Commuter Challenge winner. Most of all we hope you have fun competing and encouraging each other to discover all they ways you can see commuting differently.

If you participated in the 2023 Commuter Challenge - we want to hear from you! Take our Final Survey for a chance to provide valuable feedback to improve future challenges.

What's Your Why?

WAYS TO WIN.

Winning as a team:

To even out the competition, teams are divided into categories based on size. If you are the ONLY team in your category to achieve All-Star status (every single person at your workplace logs a sustainable commute) then you WIN. If multiple teams achieve  All-Star status,  the winner is decided by the leader boards. The winning team gets a pizza party!

FREQUENTLY
ASKED QUESTIONS

What is a commute?

The Commuter Challenge focuses specifically on your daily travel to and from your workplace. While we strongly encourage using sustainable travel modes throughout the day to run errands, grab lunch, etc. these additional trips will NOT be counted in this particular challenge. These trips should be logged as "errands" on Way to Go! Missoula.

What is a sustainable commute?

Any mode other than driving alone (walk, bike, bus, carpool, vanpool, telecommute, skateboard, rollerblade, etc.)

What counts as a carpool?

By using fewer cars to carry more people, carpool reduces traffic and lowers emissions. In order for your commute to count as a carpool, the other people in the vehicle must be eligible drivers (ie. 16 years or older with a valid driver's license.) and the car must remain at its final destination. When questioning carpool eligibility, ask yourself - Am I taking a car off the road that would otherwise be contributing to traffic and co2 emissions?

Do electric vehicles count as a sustainable mode?

Not in this challenge. The goal of the Commuter Challenge is to both reduce emissions AND mitigate traffic congestion. Driving an electric vehicle alone does not count toward the challenge, but carpooling in an electric vehicle does!
